HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Wingham Advance-Times, 1963-09-19, Page 13Interesting Antiques Seen igAt Grandmothers' Meeting WHITECHURCH--The Grand- mothers' meeting of the Worn - en's Institute was held on Tues- day last at an evening meeting in the Memorial Hall here, with the president, Mrs. Claude Coffin, presiding, After the opening exercises, 19 members answered the roll call, "Bring a guest and name her". There were 14 guests. At the business meeting the ladies decided to buy a coupon number 367, worth $10, to assist with the organizing of the North-West Territories by the Institute, and with Home Econ- omic representatives. Already four districts have been organ- ized. Mrs. Ezra Scholtz gave a reading of the history of Whitechurch, as written by the late Etta Mowbray. Mrs. Wallace Conn was in charge of the antique display, and each owner gave the history of their own antique. Mrs. Conn had a blanket, woven and dyed, in by -gone years. A Chinese coin -sword was dis- played, powder -horn and shot, for guns, quilts brought from the old country, over 90 years ago, with Bible pictured on them, wooden skates, an ox - shoe, bellows, and many dishes of nearly a century ago. Mrs. Ezra Scholtz gave two musical selections, "The Yellow Bird", and "I'm Forever Blowing Bubbles", on the auto- harp, accompanied by Mrs. Dan Tiffin on the piano. Mrs. Wm. Evans gave a reading, "A Rural Home". Mrs. Coffin and Mrs. Scholtz sang, "0 Happy Day", and Mrs. Coffin ac- companied on the auto -harp. Mrs. Garnet Farrier led in two contests. The prizes went to Mrs, Jas. Laidlaw, for the smallest feet; Mrs. W. R. Far- rier, the oldest grandmother present; Mrs. Walter Lott, who had the most grandchildren; Mrs. Claude Coffin, who had the youngest grandchild; Mrs. Scotty Ross, the grandmother who came the farthest to attend the meeting; Mrs. Johnston Conn, the grandmother who whistled the best. The National Anthem and the Institute Grace, closed the meeting. Mrs. Dan Tiffin and Mrs. Garnet Farrier, the hostes- ses provided a delicious lunch of biscuits and jam, with a cup of tea. HURT WHEN FLOOR BREAKS WHITECHURCH--An unfort- unate accident occured last Wednesday while neighbors were bringing in the crop for Jamie- son Pettapiece who is still in hospital. A board in the barn floor broke and Wallace Conn fell through almost to his armpits. There is a possibility of frac- tured ribs. South on Highway 4 PHONE 357-1438, The Wingham Advance -Times is on sale at the Newstand at the Blue Jay Snack Bar Many Attended Belgrave Fair WHITECHURCH— East Waw- anosh families were well repre- sented last Wednesday afternoon at the Belgrave School Fair, which was blessed with a fine day for their march and compe- titions on the grounds. Many admired the new arena, with the wide wagon racks, so well filled up with flowers, fruits, vegetables, baking, school work and projects, so many new ideas for Christmas decorations and plates of white or brown eggs, by the dozens. The pets, had an interested following, as did the pets out- doors, dogs, pups, goats, kids, and ponnies, and the pupils made a good job of leading and showing off their show calves. This is one of the best shows in this district, for the best show is always the one with the most home -folks attending and mak- ing it a success even by their presence. Quite a number from this district attended London Fair for a day last week. Among those who took the trip were, Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Currie and Mr. and Mrs. Russell Gaunt, Mr. and Mrs. John Norman and family, Mr. and Mrs. Wilfred Walker and family, Mr. and Mrs. Calvin Robinson, Mr. and Mrs. Mason Robinson and Elaine Mrs. Roy Robinson, Leonard and Larry, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Eckenswiller and family, Mr. and Mrs. Walter Elliott and family, Mr. and Mrs. Archie Purdon and family, Mr. and Mrs. J. D. Beecroft, and Mrs. John McGee, Wingham, Mr. and Mrs. Donald Ross, Mr. and Mrs. George McGee and Jim- mie, and Mrs. R. J. Currie. Miss Winnifred Farrier of Toronto spent the week -end with her mother, Mrs. W. R. Farrier. Juniors, who still play off in the W,O.A.A. Mr. and iv rs. Jas. Patterson of Kitchener were visiting with former friends and neighbours in this district on Saturday. Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Hen- derson and family of Listowel visited on Sunday with his aunt, Mrs. Wm. Dawson, and with Mr. and Mrs. Wesley Tiffin. Mrs. Russell Ross, Mrs. E. E. Walker, Mrs. Albert Coul- tes, Mrs. G. E. Farrier, Mrs. George Walker, and Mrs. Dan Tiffin left on Tuesday to attend the Institute Grey-iiruce con- vention at Meaford on Tuesday. Mrs. Coffin and Mrs. Emerson, as officers of the convention, will attend meetings there on Tuesday and Wednesday. A bus -load of Institute members left from Lucknow and sur- rounding district on Tuesday. Mr, and Mrs. Norman Coultes and Douglas left on Monday for Kitchener, where Douglas registered to attend Waterloo University. Cameron and Kevin Cook, sons of Mr, and Mrs. Graham Cook of Ripley, visited over the week -end with their grand- parents, Mr, and Mrs. Harry Cook of Marnoch, while their parents attended a wedding at Renfrew. Mrs. Victor Young of Wing - ham, spent a few days last week at the home of her broth- er, Mr. Adam McBurney of Marnoch. Grant McBurney, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Mc- Burney, left recently to com- mence his third year of study- ing civil engineering at Water- loo University. Grant finds his hours at work longer — from 8 to 5, and Saturday forenoons, as they are busy surveying. Mr. and Mrs. Jos. Barnes of Toronto spent the week -end with Mr. and Mrs. E. E. Walk- er. Miss Leah Currie, Mrs. Fry and Miss Fortune, of Wingham, visited last Wednesday with Mrs. Andrew Wilson and Mrs, McPhail. The Scouts and Cubs and their leaders in this district en- joyed a special treat on Sunday evening, when they met in the United Church, Belgrave and Lloyd Ackert of Holyrood who, this summer attended the Scout Jamboree in Athens, Greece was present and showed many interesting and beautifully coloured pictures of the meet- ings, and of his group of seven boys. Miss June Colyer of Lucknow spent the week -end with Mr. and Mrs. Keith Colyer. Mrs. Scottie Ross of Wingham visited with her granddaughter, Mrs. Colyer for a few days last week. Mr. and Mrs. Harry Squibb of Aurora spent a few days this week with Mr. and Mrs. Russell Chapman. Mr. and Mrs. Herb Buckton of Lucknow, visited on Sunday with his father, Mr. A. E. Buckton, and with Mr. and Mrs. Thos. Morrison. Mr, and Mrs. Walter Arscott, Valerie, Andrea and Brian King, visited on Sunday with Mr. and Mrs. Frank Scott of Mitchell. Mr, and Mrs. George Fisher, Sandra and Doris spent Sunday with Mr. and Mrs. John Car- ruthers at West Lorne. Mr. and Mrs. Millan Moore and family visited on Sunday with Mr. and Mrs. Jas. Wilson of London. Miss Muriel Moore and Miss Judith Wilson register- ed at Western University on Monday. Many in this district will be interested to hear of Mrs. (Rev.; Wm. Welsh, who nurses with the Red Cross of London. Bon- nie is in Grade 13 and Bill in Grade 12, in a London high school. Mr. Donald Ross was finish- ing up the threshing in this district on Tuesday, and this community is indeed favoured. A trip on Sunday to Southamp- ton showed many big fields of stooks, waiting for threshers, or big fields with grain lying swathed waiting for combines in Northern Bruce. The flu seems to be making its rdunds again. Ann and Mar- lene Weber were laid up over the week -end. Donald Ross, had a bad dose of it last week. Mr. and Mrs. Albert Coul- tes visited on Sunday with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. George Coultes of Belgrave. Mrs. Coultes is making slow recov- ery from her recent heart attack. They also visited with Mr. and Mrs. Robt. Coultes of Morris Twp. Mr. and Mrs. Robt. Alex- ander, and Mr. and Mrs. E. Jackman and Miss Sue Doak, all of Goderich visited on Sun- day with Mr. and Mrs. Murray Shiell. Mr. and Mrs. John Jamieson and sons visited on Sunday with Mr. and Mrs. Wilbert Proctor of Morris Twp. Mr. and Mrs. Robert Gibson of Brantford spent the week -end with her mother, Mrs. R. J. Currie. Mr. and Mrs. Wallace Conn and Mr. and Mrs. Ronald Coul- tes were in London on Friday with their sons, George Conn, and Murray Coultes, who left to register at Western Univer- sity. The Presbytery of the Pres- byterian Church is holding a meeting in Chalmers Church here, this Friday evening to welcome the student preacher, Mr. Jacob Kuiper. The people of Langside and Chalmers are all invited to attend. Mr. and Mrs. Garnet Farrier Janis and Diane Coultes and Mrs. J. G. Gillespie left on Sunday for Grand Bend, where they met Mr. and Mrs. Jack Gillespie of Sarnia and Mrs. J. G. Gillespie accompanied them to spend some time at Sarnia. Miss Donna Gillespie of Sarnia commenced training in Strathroy Hospital last week. Mr. and Mrs. Lynne Morri- son visited on Sunday with her mother, Mrs. Lawrence Machan of Brussels, Mr. and Mrs. Albert Bieman and Roger were in Guelph on Thursday and Roger registered at the O.A.C. for the four- year agricultural course. Mrs. Gilbert Beecroft was one of a car -load of U.C.W. of this district who spent the week -end at Keswick, attend- ing the U.C.W. Conference. Others who went were, Mrs. George Michie, Mrs. W. B. Cruikshank and Mrs. D. Mc- Lennan. The U.C.W. of Calvin - Brick United Church will meet this Thursday evening at the home of Mrs. Mina McRitchie. Mr. and Mrs. S. Lambert of St. Catharines spent a few days last week at the home of their daughter, Mrs. Mylis Ste. Marie. Considerable work was done last week cutting down the slopes of the hills at the corner of the tenth concession at the river. Mr. and Mrs. Don Dirstein of Toronto spent the week -end with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Russell Gaunt.
