Alcan Highway
Subject of Talk
BLUEVALE—The address of
Mrs. E. Webester, of Wingham
on the Alaska Highway was the
chief interest of the meeting of
the Bluevale Women's Institute
at the home of Mrs. Charles
Mathers on Wednesday evening.
Mrs. Webster was introduced
by Mrs. James Johnston and
gave a detailed account of a
motor trip she and Mr. Webster
took along the highway as far
as Whitehorse, covering a dis-
tance of many thousands of
miles from Wingham and re-
turn.
The Alcan Highway, partly
in Canada and partly in the
United States, was begun in
1942 by soldier engineers of
both countries. Every mile has
a marked post from Dawson to
Whitehorse. It is partly paved;
the rest being gravel road.
Twenty hours of daylight in
summer give tourists the oppor-
tunity of seeing the majestic
mountains, huge rivers, lakes
and waterfalls, mammoth
bridges, wild animals and
beautiful wild flowers.
Mr. Webster showed five
moving pictures in colour of
their long trip.
Appreciation was expressed
by Mrs. Harry Elliott and little
Donna Gamble presented a
gift to Mrs. Webster.
Mrs. George Hetherington
presided at the meeting and
the secretary, Mrs. Charles
Mathers, read the correspond-
ence. Mrs. R. J. McMurray
was appointed a delegate to the
autumn area convention at
Guelph. The roll call was "A
woman in the news". Mrs.
Carl Johnston spoke on the
motto "Memory is a wonderful
treasure chest if you know how
to pack it."
The hostess was assisted in
serving refreshments by Mrs.
Alex. Corrigan, Mrs. J. V.
Fischer, Mrs. Frank Stamper
and Mrs. Stewart McLennan.
