The Wingham Advance-Times, 1963-08-29, Page 10Page 2 — Wingham Advance -Times, Thursday, Aug. 29, 1963 Grandmothers Are Guests For Meeting FORDW ICH --The Fordwich Women's Institute held the August meeting in the com- munity hall with the grand- mothers of the community as Over 300 People At School Closing FORDWICH-- A large crowd attended the official closing of the old schoolhouse in Ford- wich on Saturday. Pupils who had attended the school were here from New York, Larder Lake, Toronto, Ottawa, Bow- manville, Barrie and Orillia. August Keil, 85, of Gorrie, who attended the school was the oldest man and Mrs. Blanche Barrons of Toronto, the oldest lady. She is 79 years old. Two hundred and fifteen signed the register and there were many who missed signing, Over 300 people did a lot of reminiscing, Pupils from this area will now attend the new 16 room central school on Highway 87, two miles northwest of Ford- wich. guests. Devotions were taken by Mrs, G. Winkel. The motto, "What we do to- day will be in the history books tomorrow", was given by Mrs. John Inglis. The roll call was "An old button and its history". Current events were given by Mrs. Harold Doig and Mrs. Clare Harris gave gleanings from the Tweedsmuir History Book. Community singing, songs of Grandmother's Day, were led by Mrs. George Richards and Miss Minnie McElwain dressed in old-fashioned cos- tume. Mrs. L. Siefert also favoured with a piano and mouth organ selection. Mrs, Harold Doig read a poem, "Ah Youth", and Mrs. Stan Bride, "Mother at Institute". Each grandmother was presented with a corsage and small gift. Leaders for the 4-H project "The Milky Way", will be Mrs. Scott Clarkson and Mrs. John Winkel, Leaders for the senior project "Desserts", are Mrs. fi William McCann and Mrs. John Craig. Mrs. Stanley Bride and Mrs. Clare Harris convened the pro- gram for the remainder of the afternoon. Fordwich News Mr. and Mrs. Earl Moore attended the funeral at Listowel last week of the former's aunt, the late Mrs. Jane Salter. Misses Glenna and Louanne Siefert of Galt spent last week at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Lorne Siefert. Mrs. Stanley Bride and Bob spent one day last week in London and also visited with Mrs. Ross Doig in Victoria Hos- pital. Master Billy Millar spent last week at the home of his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Drew Aitcheson in Elora. Mrs. Cecil Wilson attended a school convention held in Toronto one day last week.
