First, even the prosaic task of getting underway is different. The motorist with a trailer be- hind should start slowly, allow- ing more time for other traffic to clear before moving into the highway. Acceleration should be slow and even, with fre- quent brief glances into the mirror to check not only fol- lowing traffic but also the ac- tions of the trailer. Second, turning a corner with a trailer requires new techniques. The trailer wheels will not follow the exact path of your car's rear wheels. They will cut in closer to the inside of the curve. For example, to make a right turn you should position your car and trailer farther from the curb than with the car alone before beginning to make the turn. For a right angle corner proceed straight ahead until the front wheels of the car are well beyond the curb line rather than beginning the turn when the front wheels reach the curb line. Then turn slowly and bring your car back toward the curb, An out- side right-hand mirror is a big help. Third, in overtaking and passing you need to remember that the towed vehicle will re- duce your acceleration capa- bility and that you must allow much more distance to pass and return to the proper lane. Thus you should have ample clear distance ahead. Avoid sudden swerves which can make the trailer harder to han- dle. Fourth, being overtaken and passed also calls for special techniques. Your speed will he slower than that of many others on the highway. Special attention should be given to drivers desiring to pass. When a heavy bus or truck passes you the air it pushes aside will tend to cause the rear of your trailer to move to the right. Almost immediately the same thing will happen to the front of the trailer. Knowing that this is coming, plus slight steering, will help. Braking should be avoided. Fifth, slowing and stopping should be assiduously practiced. This also is far different from stopping the car alone. The differences stem from extra weight and length, over-all load distribution, effects of action of springs and shock absorbers and the linking of the two units. Some points to keep in mind in stopping your car and trailer: practice before you get into traffic, be sure trailer brakes are adjusted to the load, main- tain a greater following dis- tance than with your car alone, drive at speeds that will mini- mize the need for emergency slow -downs and stops, general- ly avoid high-speed lanes and make extra safety allowances Goodyears Will Play Two Groups The Brophy Goodyears are again entering in the Ontario Amateur Softball Association Int, C all Ontario play-offs. This classification is for popu- lation up to 3500. The following teams are in this class: Forest, Highgate, Merlin, Wellesley, Essex. Abingdon, Crystal Beach, Sel- kirk, Brooklin, Markham, Port Perry, Bloomfield, Frank - ford, Mador, Marmora, Rid- eau, Elmvale, Wiarton and Capreol. The Goodyears will first meet either Wiarton or Elm - vale. Merlin was last year's champion team. W.O.A.A. The Brophy Goodyears in W.O,A.A. Int. Wingham are the defending champs in this series. for unfavorable conditions. -The sixth special skill is the most exacting of all—backing. It is such a specialized skill that the OML recommends backing a trailer be avoided whenever possible. The first thing to remember about backing is that the trailer will back in a direction op- posite from the way you turn the car's wheels. If you want to back to the left turn the wheels to the right and vice versa for backing to the right, You should practice on a flat open space before attempt- ing to back into such places as driveways or alleys. Get out of the car and check for ob- structions in the place you want to back. When you are ready begin to back slowly, turning the steering wheel slightly in the proper direction then straightening it, Steering is done by a series of slight turns and straightening actions. After you've backed a few feet get out and check your progress. A helper to give directions can speed your back- ing practice. Timing is important. There is usually a delayed action be- tween the movement of the steering wheel and the rig's re- sponse, the degree of delay varying with different hookups. Only experience will teach you the delay time with your own rig, When you've practiced right, left and straight backing and feel you have made good progress try backing into a specified spot such as a parking space. That's where the real skill conics in.
