New IGA Store to Open
On Former Brunswick Site
The doors of the new Rem-
ington I.G.A. Store will
officially open on Thursday
morning, providing the public
with another up-to-date and
highly modem supermarket in
Wingham.
The new building has been
under construction since spring
on the site of the fire -gutted
Brunswick Hotel which burned
in the fall of 1958.
The structure provides some
six thousand square feet of
floor space and will allow
Harold Remington, the owner,
to nearly double the stock
which he carried at his old
stand beside the town hall.
Constructed of cement
block with angel stone on the
front of the building, the main
structure is of welded steel
beams with a full basement,
The main floor, supported by
the steel beams is made from
steel decking covered with
concrete. Roof construction is
similar, except the decking
is covered with asphalt roofing
and gravel.
The store contains nearly
twice the amount of refrigerat-
4
ed counter display for meats,
dairy produce and frozen foods.
The shelves carrying general
merchandise are stocked with
over 3, 500 different items,
Walk-in refrigeration will pro-
vide storage for fresh meat
and another for produce. The
compressor units for the coun-
ters and walk-in are located in
the basement.
Special Prices
For Thursday, Friday and
Saturday the store will feature
dozens of items at special
prices to mark the official
opening.. Check the full page
advertisement for these specials
The whole building pre-
sents a highly modern atmos-
phere to Wingham's main street,
from the front entrance, with
an automatic door -opener on
the exit side, to the rear doors
which service the parking lot
at the back. Modern auto-
matic check-outs will provide
fast and efficient service for
the customers. Various shades
of pastel colors provide a
pleasing color scheme for the
interior of the building, which
is lighted by long runs of
fluorescent tubes. There is
considerable warehousing
space on the main floor as well
as in the basement.
Besides Mr. Remington,
there are eleven members on
the staff to provide personal
service to the public to make
shopping as easy and pleasant
as possible.
Decade of Service
The store is actually owned
by Remington's Limited, the
shares being held by Harold
Remingon of Wingham, and his
brothers Dave of Kincardine,
Jim of Goderich and a brother-
in-law, Laurie Slade of Clinton.
The firm operates stores in the
four towns and will open a
new store, now under con-
struction, in Mitchel this fall,
which will be managed by
John Preston, who has been
working in Wingham for several
months.
The family business started
as a clothing store in the village
of Ripley, then expanded to
Kincardine and Chesley before
opening a store in the present
Bondi building nine years ago.
In the interval the Chesley
