pond near here. The black,
a much larger duck, arrived at
the small pond first with nine
ducklings but the number had
been reduced to five a week
later by predators,
The wood duck arrived later
with eight downy young but,
two days later, the hen was
missing and, from the wander-
ings of the ducklings, it was
obvious that something was
wrong, It didn't take the
black duck long to make a de-
