OF MANY
THINGS
by Ambrose Hills
HERE WE GO AGAIN!
Once more our house is in an
uproar. My family is prepar-
ing to go to the summer cottage
for the season. For some reason
I can't quite fathom, it is
necessary to leave our house
spotless -so that I can have a
summer to mess it up in.
Of course, it is just possible
my wife hopes that this year it
will be different; that she will
leave it spotless and find it the
same when she returns. I don't
think that is her motive.
Actually, if the family were
to return this fall and find that
I had been a tidy housekeeper,
that everything was in good
shape, there would be dis-
appointment. A man is suppos-
ed to be a lousy housekeeper.
No woman would admit it, but
they'd be bitterly disappointed
if they found no stains behind
the sink, no ashtrays loaded
with butts, no unmade beds or
undusted corners.
Well, my wife can relax,
I'll not disturb any of the dust.
There will be stains behind the
sink and in it. I will conform,
just as most other husbands do.
I have the same plans for
this summer that I have had for
centuries. I am going to get
some work done. I will be able
to write superb prose in a quiet
house, perhaps three or four
