Minister's Father
Died Suddenly
Leonard W. Fish, father of
Rev. Gordon L. Fish of Wing -
ham, died suddenly last week
while he and members of his
family were on a motor trip.
They had spent Tuesday night
with their son here and had
then driven to the Peterboro
district, where they were to
holiday with relatives. Mr.
Fish took ill at Lakefield and
passed away. He had been in
poor health for the past year,
but it was thought his condition
was improving,
Born at Minton, Quebec, he
had lived at St. Thomas for
about 40 years, where he con-
ducted a market gardening busi-
ness. He was a veteran of the
First World War.
He is survived by his wife,
one son, Gordon, of Wingham
and a daughter, Mrs. A. D.
Douglas, St. Thomas and five
grandchildren.
Funeral service was conduct-
ed
onducted at the Union United Church
on Saturday and interment was
in the cemetery at Union.
ONLY TWO LANGUAGES?
Canada has only two official
languages—French and English.
But a great many more tongues
are spoken in this country. In
fact, in Canada and the United
States, there are no fewer than
ten language families, with
more than one thousand sub-
ordinate languages and dialects.
MEMBERS OF THE 19th FIELD Regiment, who will
be visiting Wingham for a reunion this week -end, will
well remember this piece of equipment, the old 25 -
pounder on a self-propelled carriage. Alex Corrigan
supplied the print and he recalled that they only got
about four miles to the gallon.
OLD ARMY FRIENDS will recall this group during the
heavy fighting in France shortly after D -Day when this
picture was taken. The men are George Tervit, of
Wingham; Larry Bester, Walkerton; Ed McGrade, Tor-
onto; Bob Thompson, Toronto; Jim Haldenby, Sault
Ste. Marie, and Pte. St. Germaine, Peace River. Their
self-propelled gun is in the background. They were
members of the 19th Field Regiment which is holding
a reunion here this week -end.
Five Fatalities
During Month
Provincial Police District No.
6, of which Wingham is a part,
reports five fatal accidents dur-
ing the month of May, with a
loss of five lives, but 72 persons

in the same period. There was
a total of 152 accidents,
The police checked 5955 ve-
hicles and issued 2082 warnings.
Eight hundred and seventy-five
charges were preferred.

tain. Polish divisions fought
in Norway, Africa, Normandy
and Germany. The Polish
