Officer Sees
"Boot Tree"
Port Arthur—We have pro-
bably all seen boot trees but a
conservation officer stationed
with the Port Arthur District
Office claims to be the first to
see a "tree boot", He found it
on a small neglected island in
the centre of an unnamed laze
near Poshkokagan River.
Curious to see what myster-
ies this tiny island held, the
patrolling conservation officer
beached his canoe and stepped
ashore. The first thing he saw
was an old boot, such as bush
travellers wore long ago, with
a five foot tree growing through
it! Close by was a ragged,
long abandoned pair of weather
beaten mackinaw bush pants
which had been tossed over a
branch, A bird had built its
nest in one pocket, The nest
was well insulated on the out-
side with mackinaw cloth.
A bountiful picnic lunch was
served, followed by the usual
ice-cream treats by the Mess-
engers.

Simmons. She said our talents
are like the Bible story. We
are all human beings but we
differ greatly in talents -some
more, some fewer, but we
should use what we have.
Roll call was "My favourite
house plant" and the old stand-
by, geranium, and African vio-
'let were most popular.
The guest speaker was Bert
Winston, whose topic was " Hor-
ticulture" . He gave the ladies
some very valuable hints on
gardens and flowers and spoke
on the English primrose, which
:he grows in his own garden. He
.was given a small gift. Mr.
;Winston also told the ladies
]about lettuce that winters in
the ground.
Mrs. Clare Harris and Mrs.
.Crosby Sotheran gave reports on
the district annual meeting. A
;',penny auction was held and
(cards were signed for three hos-
ipitalized members. A social
?hour was spent over the teacups
