Former Resident
Mrs. A. G. Smith
Dies in Hospital
Mrs, Andrew G. Smith, a
former resident of Wingham,
died on June 12 in York County
Hospital, Newmarket. She
would have been 78 on June 20
Mrs. Smith was the former
Jean Irving, daughter of the
late James and Isabelle Irving
of Lucknow. She married Mr.
Smith, a native of Kincardine,
in June, 1911, when he was
working for the Lucknow Sent-
inel. They later came to
Wingham and Mr. Smith was
managing editor of the Advance,
for Mr. Joynt. He purchased
the Advance and later the
Times, and it was Mr. Smith
who amalgamated the two pa-
pers, along with the Gorrie Vi-
dette and Wroxeter News.
Mr. and Mrs, Smith left
Wingham for Toronto in 1927.
About sixteen years ago Mr.
and Mrs. Smith purchased the
Dovercourt Press, which they
operated until the time of his
death last year. Mrs. Smith
had lived with her daughter at
Bradford since that time, until
she was hospitalized.
She is survived by a son,
Irving of Pittsburgh; one daugh-
ter, Mrs, W, K. Whyte of
Bradford; two sisters, Misses
Edythe and Euphemia Irving of
St. Petersburgh, Fla.
She was predeceased by her
husband and a son, James
Alvin, who lost his life in
World War II.
Funeral service was held in
Lucknow on June 15 with inter-
ment in Kintail Cemetery.
Although man has, through
evolution, learned to walk up-
right, his eyes still swing from
limb to limb.
