Artificial Respiration Dates Back Centuries
It is interesting to look back
in history and discover that
artificial respiration is not only
c" very old, but has some strong
ramifications. For example,
the early Greeks, realizing
that an asphyxiated person
must have his breathing restored
by some means, hit on an un-
usual idea... they would place
the victim flat on his back and
a bucketful of boiling pitch
would be dashed on his chest!
They believed his gasp of sur-
prise would restore breathing
(actually, many did breathe
again, only to die from burns
and shock,
The Old Testament speaks
of Elijah placing his body onto
that of an asphyxiated boy, and why were for many years mis*
then raising it again. Other
methods used have included
pounding a victim's soles with
a heavy board, dragging him
around pulled by a charging
horse and placing him over a
barrel. The barrel idea was
about the closest to our present
method, even though the reason

Two fishermen sitting on a
bridge, their lines in the water
below, made a bet as to who
would catch the first fish. One
got a bite and became so ex-
cited that he fell off the bridge,
"Oh, well," said the other,
"if you're going to dive for
them, the bet's off."

WINGHAM. ONTARIO
Kenneth G. Musclow, B.Sc.,
has been appointed field officer
for the Maitland Valley Conser-
vation Authority by the Conser-
vation Branch of the Depart-
ment of Lands and Forests. He
will be located in the Authori-
ty's new office, which is open-
ing in Listowel this week.
A graduate of the University
of New Brunswick at Fredericton
with a bachelor of science de-
gree in Forestry, Mr. Musclow
has considerable experience in
conservation work, although
this is his first appointment as
field officer.
Since leaving university in
1957, he has been employed
with the Ontario Government.
He started with the Department
of Commerce and Development
and subsequently transferred to
the Conservation Authorities
Branch of the Department of
Lands and Forests. Until com-
ing to Listowel, he has been in
the head offices at Toronto and
Downsview.
A native of North Bay, he re
ceived his elementary and se-
condary education in that city.
He is a member of the Cana-
dian Institute of Forestry and
the Ontario Professional Fores-
ters' Association.
Since the Middle Maitland
was formed in 1952, the Au-
thority has shared a field of-
ficer with the Ausable Conser-
vation Authroity, J. T. Mc-
Cauley of Exeter was serving in
that capacity for both authori-
ties.
A year ago the Middle Mait-
land was enlarged to control the
entire Maitland watershed em-
bracing 29 instead of 12 muni-
cipalities. Consideratio is now
being given to including The
Bayfield watershed into a two -
river authority.
With all tributaries now un-
der authority control and a con-
siderable increase in conserva-
tion projects, the work became
too involved for a field officer
on a share -the -time basis. Hon.
Kelso Roberts granted a petition
from the Maitland Authority and
