GORRIE-The congregation
of the Gorrie United Church was
privileged to participate with
the members of the Sunday
School in their annual church
school anniversary and flower
service, which was held at 11
a.m., Sunday. The church
was filled to capacity with
many coming as early as 10:30
to enjoy the prelude of familiar
hymns on the organ and piano,
presented by Miss Carol Robin-
son and Miss Corrinne Rhame.
The theme of this year's ser-
vice was "Praise to God", and
this thought was carried through-
out in song, and verse. The
entry to the church was made
beautiful with baskets of flow-
ers against a background of
ferns and evergreens. Each
window carried the message of
the open Bible, the inspiration
of "Praise to God". A large
open Bible formed the focal
point of the worship centre.
This beautiful Bible was the
gift to the church, from the
Cathers family in honor of the
memory of Mr. and Mrs, Ro-
bert Gathers.
Trellises filled with ever-
greens and spring flowers, and
ferns and baskets of flowers,
made a fitting background for
the pupils of the church school,
who entered in a floral proces-
sional to the theme hymn,
"Praise Him, Praise Him".
The call to worship was
given by Brian Johnston, follow-
ed by the hymn "Come Child-
ren, Join to Sing", in chorus by
the Sunday School pupils. A
poem," Because I Know" , by
Earl John Thornton preceded an
anthem," Praise the Lord" by
six members of the junior de-
partment. Paula Felker, Col-
een Carson, Brenda Ferguson,
Peggy Carson, Brian Robinson
and Clark Hyndman. A poem,
"God Gives So Many Lovely
Things" by Marion Adams, and
the Scripture recited by Jean
Brown, was followed by a
"Litany of Praise" led by Don-
ald Watson.
While the congregation join-
ed in the hymn, "May Jesus
Christ Be Praised", the Sunday
School pupils took their places
in the front pews. A poem,
"Praise Him Everywhere", by
Barbara Thornton, was followed
by the Psalm of praise, "The
Lord Is My Shepherd" sung by
nine members of the junior
choir. The offertory music of
the organ and piano during the
receiving of the offering was
well received, as was the an-
them by the junior choir,
"Praise the Lord".
The guest speaker, Mrs.
Arthur Jackson, of Atwood,
gave an exceptionally fine ad-
dress, directing her remarks to
the children, but giving the
older folk plenty of food for
thought, too. Using the story
of David and Goliath as an il-
lustration, Mrs. Jackson pre-
sented the challenge to youth
in growing up and making a
worthwhile contribution as ma-
ture and sincere Christians.
The hymn, "How Great Thou
Art" and the benediction, pro-
nounced by Rev. Taylor,
brought the service to a close.
Mr. Taylor, very graciously
paid tribute to the teachers,
the organist, and the junior
choir, and thanked those who
in any way contributed to the
success of the service. Special
commendation was paid to Su-
san Templeman, a patient in
the Wingham Hospital for her
part in making some of the
floral decorations.
It is only through the co-
operation of the many who
work hours behind the scenes,
that such a setting can be cre-
ated, and months of planning
culminate in a service which is
truly a highlight in the church
year.
Mrs. E. Zinn Has Hon. Membership
BELMORE-Tire May meeting
of the Women's Missionary So-
ciety of Knox Presbyterian
Church, was held on May 23, in
the church school room with
Mrs. E. Jeffray, the president,
in charge.
The meeting opened with
singing Psalm d6, "O Send Thy
Light Forth." Business was dis-
cussed and two representatives
from the society were appointed
to the Kintail Camp Association,
Mrs. I. Leeson and Mrs, A.
Mundell. Mrs. E, Zinn showed
the Honorary Membership she
had received from the Maitland
Presbyterial to the members,
Suggesting that it was an honour
to the whole society rather
than the individual member.
Donna Jeffray and Glenda Bal-
lagh received the offering.
Mrs. A. Mundell read a
Psalm and Mrs. Jas. Dickson
led in prayer. Mrs. Leeson pre-
sented a study of " The Rim of
East Asia", stressing the socio-
logical similarities in Korea,
Hong Kong, Okinawa and For-
mosa, and the increasing pre-
valence of western customs.
Though the Christian church is
a small minority it may in fu-
ture prove to be the salvation
of this arca.
The meeting closed with
singing "Zion's King Shall
Reign Victorious" and the Miz-
pah benediction.
