It's no joke when one is in the process of getting new choppers, especially when the toothsome new smile in- volves getting rid of some teeth to which you are very much at- tached. Practically nobody we know likes going to the dentist, even when that doctor of dentistry is a personal friend. We're all "chicken" when it comes to talking turkey with our dentist, no matter how foully that bum tooth is treating us. We'll do almost anything to duck out of the appointment. And aren't we being silly and childish, we realize after the dentist has done his work and we climb out of his chair. It hasn't hurt a bit and here we've been dreading the ordeal, post- poning the visit perhaps for weeks. Like on Saturday when the summons came. The Villen- euve voice was cheery, but we were chary as we learned this was the day. Somehow we struggled up the street, dripped into the dental chair and man- aged to keep a stiff upper lip as our upper lip was made stiff by a series of pin pricks. There came that awesome moment when the chair back was lowered and one was lying there helpless. Only a mite comforting was the thought that Bernie was a friend who could be trusted. "Now you can spit," he remarks moments later, and you realize with relief that four bothersome teeth will never bother you no more, and that their removal has been done with dexterous simplicity. "What a pal, this dentist friend," you're thinking. And you're kicking yourself for all the worrying about nothing you've been doing. But it seems that's the way all of us approach the dental chair. Not only do we make a big deal out of the visit to the dentist, but we pass that stupid dread on to our children. And thus we make the life of the dentist a daily battle with fear that is almost wholly in the patient's imagination. It's sel- dom if ever as bad as we were certain it would be. What gets us is why people who hesitate to go to a dentist will vote against the fluorida- tion of a community's water supply. Here is a proven post- poner of visits to the dentist for filling of cavities. And yet the same parents who dread that visit to the dentist are sentenc- ing their children to the same imagined torment. It doesn't add up. - Glen- gary News. "People who suffer from ath- lete's foot should wear nothing but cotton hose," says a physi- cian. But in public places wouldn't they appear rather conspicuous?"
