... And there's a legal
limit to the snow here In
Camelet 1 "
These are some of the lyrics
from the title song of the hit
Broadway play 'Camelot', and
'tis a pity there isn't a legal
limit to the snow around home-
town Wingham, for a few feet
of the white stuff prevented
people from seeing one of the
finest variety concerts ever
presented by the students of
Wingham Districh High School.
The evening got under way
with some witticisms and some
words of welcome by the presi-
dent of the Students' Council,
Philip Adams, and was follow-
ed by displays of talent in
every facet of the extra -curri-
cular school timetable. The
dances, under the direction of
Miss Winnifred Munroe, came
under the headings of" Twelfth
Street Rag", "Hot Pretzels",
and "Dundal".
The selections by the school
orchestra showed a lot of re-
hearsal (with the exception of
one number) and some budding
musical ability. The trampo-
line display, although it look-
ed like fun, wasn't as fascinat-
ing to watch as previous dis-
plays by some of the top sports-
men in the school.
"Search Me", a play by
Robert Middlemass, was one of
the best one -act plays ever
written and was performed well
by its lead players, Peter -John
Pace, Mary Haugh, Peter
Mulvey, Russell Press, John
McDowell. The real perform-
ers in the group were Peter -
John Pace, who dominated
every scene in his portrayal of

after all,
But with all the fine per-
formances elsewhere, it was
really the musical numbers that
shone, and every time a choir
took the stage, they held the
audience in the palms of their
hands with their lovely choral
arrangements. The credit for
this goes to music supervisor
Mrs. Carl Douglas, who con-
ducted the students through
gorgeous Gershwin music ('Sum-
mertime'), Lerner -and -Loewe
compositions ('Camelot', 'How
to Handle a Woman'), and the
beautiful Albert Hay Malotte
composition of 'The Lord's
Prayer', and gave us some of
the most thrilling arrangements
ever heard of the rousing 'Cali-
fornia, Here I Come', movie
theme music from 'Exodus' and
the song with which they closed
the show, 'The Parting Song',
This choir, I am convinced,
.could hold its own with some of
the most famous professional
choirs in North America; it is
a pity they must be enjoyed by
only a chosen audience.
When the music faded in
The Parting Song, everyone in
the audience must have made a
very wise decision to return
next year, winter or no. I
surely speak for all of them
when I say that all your efforts,
teachers and students, are very
much appreciated; and keep up
the good world

That 'happening' on Close-
up on Sunday evening was
about the kookiest thing I have
ever seen! These people are
nuts, and after fifteen minutes
of that so-called 'art', I felt
like one too. You have to be
a beatnik to understand these
people and although , ,tris of
their art and poetry did make
sense, more was just nothing
but craziness. They strive to
be different; well, they're dif-
ferent all right, but I'm not
sure I'd be proud of it if Iwere
one of them. That jerk who
thought of a bathtub as a coffin
must be a real fatalist! Any-
way, in case you're interested,
these things take place in a
small Bohemian club in Toron-
to. Don't look for yours truly
there, though!

Wedding bells have been
pealing for some of show biz'
most prominent folks. In Las
Vegas last week, Tony Curtis
married young actress Chris-
tine Kaufmann, a German
fraulein he met while both of
them worked in Argentina on
the movie "Taras Bulba" . He
is the former husband of act-
ress Janet Leigh. Tony is more
than twice his new bride's age;
she is only seventeen. It will
be interesting to see how long
she can withstand the life as
wife of an American movie
idol.

In Paris last week, in the
surprise announcement of the
month, Paul Anka married
model Anne De Zogheb. He is
one of our top young (22)
singer -composers; was born and
started his career in Ottawa,
Ontario, but now lives in New
York. She is the 20 -year-old
daughter of a Count and Coun-
tess who live in Paris. They
met last year in Puerto Rico,
where Paul was filling a sing-
ing engagement. The wedding
took place in Paris, and they
are honeymooning in the Swiss
resort, St. Moritz. Their
romance was a closely -guarded
secret; most of Hollywood did
not even know the gal existed.
If he's wise, he'll follow Perry
Como's lead and continue to
keep his private life under his
hat !

•" The problem of survival is
talked about in every nation of
the earth today. Although
answers to this problem are
many, the Bible gives the most
interesting and the best answer:'
So stated T. R. Jones of Toron-
to when he addressed 575 Jeho-
vah's Witnesses as they assemb-
led in the Collingwood District
High School auditorium Sunday
afternoon.
Mr. Jones, a travelling rep-
resentative of the Watch Tower
Society said, "The survival
problem has many facets,
C. B.R. warfare, radio -active
fallout along with population

les of the human race to great

Postage Stamps
Canada's Postmaster General
has released details of a new
commemorative stamp which
will be issued on March 5th.
The stamp will commemorate
the 150th anniversary of the
birth of Sir Casimir Growski.
Sir Casimir was born in St.
Petersburg, Russia, the son of a
Polish nobleman, He came to
Canada in 1842, and as an en-
gineer, soldier, and educator
took a very active interest in
Canada's development from
then until his death in 1898.
The design of the stamp
which is the work of Philip
Weiss of Ottawa shows Sir Casi-
mir as a man of about 50 years
of age. In the background to
the right of the stamp are a
ship in a canal, an engine, and
a bridge symbolizing SirCasi-
mir's engineering projects,
which include the widening of
the Welland Canal, the build-
ing of the Grand Trunk Railway
between Sarnia and Toronto
and the construction of the In-
ternational Bridge between Fort
Erie and Buffalo.
In addition to his engineer-
ing projects Sir Casimir found
time to be one of the founders
of the organization which later
became the Engineering Insti-
tute of Canada and to be first
chairman of the Niagara Falls
Park Commission.

After referring to the Bible
writer Zephaniah, 2:3 Scripture
he asked, "Do you want to
have this hope for survival?
Then search the Bible," he
concluded, "live by its laws

plies the answer for our problem
of survival."
Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Ged-
des of Wingham were among
the visiting delegates. "I
thoroughly enjoyed my visit
with others from various parts
of the province," Leonard said.

PRECIOUS STONES MUST
COME "UP TO SCRATCH"
Hardness, or resistance to
scratching, is measured by a
special scale in the case of
precious stones. The hardest
substance, diamond, has a
rating of 10, It can scratch
any other stone. Each kind of
precious stone will scratch any
other stone with a hardness
rating below its own, on the
special scale, and it may, in
turn, be scratched by any stone
of greater hardness. Strictly
speaking, only diamonds,
rubies and sapphires are pre-
cious stones. All others are
semi-precious,
