The charter meeting of the
Huron County Beef Improve-
ment Association last Thursday
in Clinton, was attended by
only 35 people, because of the
weather conditions. Only six
of the sixteen elected directors,
one from each of the sixteen
townships, were able to be
present.
The purpose of the new as-
sociation is to promote improve-
ment in the quality of beef
cattle in Ontario. Meetings,
field days and tours will be
held to inform members on the
latest developments in the beef
cattle industry. Other aims
are to provide information to
producers and marketers, and
through the provincial associa-
tion, to co-operate with govern-
ment in legislative programs
pertaining to the industry.
It was decided to hold a
meeting of directors to name
the first executive. The direc-
tors are:

It was a good meeting,

Bob McGregor, president of
the Huron Beef Producers As-
sociation, said earlier that he
hoped the new organization
would enable area producers to
solve their problems without
hard feelings.
Mr. McGregor pointed out
that the Beef Producers would
no longer be associated with
the Federation of Agriculture
because it would not be a com-
modity group. Bob Eaton,
fieldman for the Federation said
that the new association will be
conducted similar to the Crop
Improvement Association.
Rabies Cases
In Huron Co.
Dr. J.C. MacLennan of the
Health Animals branch in Sea -
forth, reports that six cases of
rabies were confirmed in Huron
during January. There were
three foxes, two skunks and a
cattle beast.
Since February 1, Dr. Mac-
Lennan says several cases of
rabies have been diagnosed in
cattle on three separate prem-
ises; two in Hullett Township
and one in Howick. All are
believed to have originated
from rabid skunk contacts.
Dogs and cats allowed to
run at large are a hazard. Most
persons would hesitate to handle
wild animals but would not be
concerned about a stray dog or
cat. The doctor said that
since domestic animals with
rabies have a history of con-,
tact with rabid or suspiciously
rabid foxes or skunks, they may
well be Just as dangerous as
wild life.
