The Wingham Advance-Times, 1963-02-07, Page 9Howick Agricultural Society Shows Financial Balance, 90 Members GORRIE—The annual meet - .g of the Howick Agricultural Society was held in the Gorrie Orange Hall with a very good attendance, despite adverse road and weather conditions. The financial report was given by the secretary -treasurer show- ing a good balance of $1444,81 with an operating profit for 1962 of $402.98. There are at present over 90 members in the society. Mrs. Wm. Wilson and Mrs, Norman Harding gave good re- ports of the district No. $ an- nual meeting held in Stratford. Wilson, Roy Strong, Mrs. Harold Robinson were named delegates to attend the Fair's Convention to be held in King Edward Hotel, Toronto, Febru- ary 20 and 21. The executive with Presi- dent Ronald McMichael, 1st vice, Robt. McConnell, 2nd vice, Wm. Wilson and direc- tors will be completing the se- cond year of a two-year term. A directors' meeting follow- ed the annual meeting, at which Norman Harding was re- appointed Federation of Agri- culture Fair representative. The secretary was instructed to pay the affiliation fee and Gorrie Personals Mr. and Mrs. Sam Sweeny and Mrs. Elizabeth Cardiff of Brussels visited Sunday with Mr. and Mrs. Edgar Dane and Mrs. M. Taylor. Mr. and Mrs. Norman Wade visited Mrs. Mary'Wade and Mr. and Mrs. Curtis Jordan of Fordwich on Sunday. St. Stephen's Jr. Auxiliary GORRIE--On Tuesday of last week the first meeting of the New Year for the Junior Auxil- iary was held in the basement of St. Stephen's Anglican Church. Thirteen members were present. An election of officers re- sulted in President, Dawna Ben- nett; secretary, Judy King; treasurer, Geraldine May. Mrs. G. A. Anderson is the leader and Mrs. May is assistant lead- er. The meeting opened with prayer and roll call. The Bible reading was taken by Mrs May. Collection was taken up and the story of Mary Jones was read by several of the girls. Mrs. Anderson read a letter from Mrs. Helen Buglar, dio- cesan secretary. Coup - Harmony Unit Holds Meeting WROXETER—The Harmony Unit of the United Church Wo- men met on Tuesday evening at the home of Mrs. Jas. Wylie with 15 members and one visitor in attendance. Mrs. Bruce Chambers and Mrs. Lyle Hart were in charge of the meeting. A New Year's meditation was given by Mrs. Chambers and an article from the United Church Observer "What Is Pray- er" was read by Mrs. Bart. "The Living God", from "The Word'and The Way" was very ably presented by Mrs. Vernon tlupfer. A humorous poem, "How Do I Know", was read by Mrs. Chambers. Shower Held For Miss Byers GORRIE--Mrs. Gladstone Edgar was hostess for a miscel- laneous shower held in honour of Verna Byers, of Dublin, prior to her marriage on Saturday to Earl Edgar, son of Stanley Ed- gar, Molesworth, and the late Mrs. Edgar. The bride is a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ed- ward Byers of Dublin. In charge of the entertain- ment were Mrs, Robt. Strong, Mrs. Wm. Strong and Mrs. Donald Edgar. There were 30 attended among which were the brides mother, Mrs. Byers and her two sisters, Mrs. Jean Cooke and Mrs. Geraldine John- ston from Dublin. Ruth McLennan, Unit President BLUEVALE--Unit One, of the 4-11 Club, met at the home of Ivlrs. Jim Thompson on Feb- ruary 2nd. They opened with the 4-H pledge, which was followed by the introduction of each of the twelve members. The following officers were elected: President, Ruth Mc- Lennan; vice president, Dianne Near; pianist, Kathy Craig; press representative, Margaret Craig. Members discussed Achieve- ment Day plans and outlined their project. Pat Craig demon strated the equipment for the sewing box. Notes were given by the leaders. Kathy Craig and Edith Shaw demonstrated taking measure- ments and Mrs. Thompson de- monstrated patching. Mrs.Wm. Michel Dies in London GORRIE--Mrs. Matilda Mich- el, 8'7, died Thursday in Vic- toria Hospital, London. She was a native of Grey Township. Her husband William Michel predeceased her 21 years ago. Surviving are three sons, Clair, London; Cloyne, Gorrie; Willard, Los Angeles, Cal.; two daughters Mrs. Velma Vodden, London, Mrs. Roy (Muriel) Gregor, Sudbury; one sister Mrs. Hulda Woods, Brus- sels. Funeral service was held Monday at the R. A. Rann fun- eral home, Brussels. Burial in Mt. Pleasant cemetery, Ethel. U.C. Sends $100 To Capital Fund GORRIE--Rev. Fred W.
