District Schools
Face Big Losses
The opening weeks of 1903
have proved costly for school
boards in the Huron -Bruce area,
where thousands of school days
have been lost by students be-
cause bus transport could not
travel over snow -clogged roads.
Though the buses to the
Wingham District High School
have operated whenever poss-
ible without risk to the young
passengers, the attendance has
been trimmed to 1010 of nor-
mal on a few occasions.
Taxpayers may not realize
that government grants are paid
to our elementary and second-
ary schools on a basis of atten-
dance. There is a reduction in
grants for every pupil missing
from regular classes and as a
consequence local ratepayers
must shoulder a higher propor-
tion of the schools' costs of
operation.
There is some possibility
that an approach will be made
