The inaugural meeting of
the Howick Township Council
for 1963 was held in the clerk's
office on January 5. All mem-
bers were present and subscrib-
ed to the declaration of their
respective offices: Ivan Haskins,
reeve; Robert Gibson, deputy
reeve; Frank King, councillor;
E. H. Strong, councillor and
Harvey McMichael, councillor.
The ministers of the local
churches, Rev. F. Taylor, Rev.
H. Pace, Rev. G. Andrewsand
Rev. A. C. Coles were present
and conducted a devotional
period.
The minutes of the lastregu-
lar meeting were read and adop-
ted on motion of Strong and
Gibson.
Gibson -Strong: That the bor-
rowing By -Law No. 1-63 of the
Township of Howick for the
year 1963 as read a first and
second time be passed.
McMichael -King: That By -
Law No. 1-63 of the Township
of Howick for the year 1963 as
read a third time be finally
passed.
'Strong -King: That the reeve
and clerk be instructed to sign
the application for the balance
of the statutory grant under the
Highway Improvement Act.
McMichael -King: That we
appoint Roy Strong as building
inspector for the year 1963.
King -McMichael: That we
join the Association of Rural

Gorrie Defeats
Fordwich 8-4
GORRIE—Gorrie defeated
Fordwich 8-4 in a Western On-
tario Athletic Association inter-
mediate hockey game played
in the Belmore arena last week.
Brian Sanderson, Peter Doig
and Douglas Whitfield each
scored twice for the winners,
while Terry Clarke and John
Brown added singles.
Garfield Gibson got two
.goals and David Steinacher and
James Douglas picked up one
each for Fordwich.

has sold his farm to Freeman
Coblentz of Delaware, U.S.A.
Possession will be given April
1st.
Both general stores in Gorrie
have recently been sold. Cam-
eron Edgar, has sold his store
to Clifford Pyke, R.R. 2, Gor-
rie. Possession was given Jan-
uary 1st. Mrs. A. L. Stephens'
general store has been purchas-
ed by Gordon Coulter, R.R. 1,
Gorrie, who gets possession
April 1st.
Make Plans for
Two Bonspiels
GORRIE--The Howick Lion's
Club held its business meeting
in the dining room of the Gor-
rie restaraunt on January 7th,
with Lion Jack Clark, presi-
dent,in the chair.
It was decided to make a
donation to the Lake Joseph
Training Center for the blind.
During the past year eye glass-
es were supplied to a child,
donations made to the C.N.I. B.,
Listowel Arena Building Fund,
Red Cross Water Safety Com-
mittee and Salvation Army for
needy children along with
minor donations.
It was decided to hold the
,next regular supper meeting
with Wingham Lions, on Jan-
uary 22. Arrangements were
made to hold two curling bon -
'spiels in the Listowel Arena on
January 30 and March 6. Lion
Harry Templeman was appoint-
ed public relations officer.
The meeting closed with lunch.
GORRIE—The Women.'s In-
stitute held its January meet-
ing at the home of Mrs. John
Baylor, which opened with the
Ode followed by the Mary Ste-
wart Collect. Leaders for the
girls' sewing club are Mrs.
Clarence Stokes, Mrs. Russell
Adams, Mrs. Harry•Rhame and
Mrs. Gerald Galbraith.
Family night, set for March,
will be a dinner party at the
Four Winds Restaurant. There
is to be a smorgasbord supper
in the communtiy hall on Feb-
ruary 1st, The card parties
are to start Monday, January
14 at the hall. The roll call
was answered by eighteen
members paying a penny for
every inch of their waistlines.
Mrs. Charles Schaefer, Ford-
wich, was the guest speaker.
She was introduced by Mrs.
Harold Keil. Her topic was
"Keep Life In" and dealt with
hemhorrage and artificial res-
piration. Mrs. Keil thanked
her and presented her with a
small gift.
The motto, "Health is
wealth, let no one be a spend
thrift", was capably given by
Mrs. Keil. The meeting closed
with the national anthem and
a delightful half hour was
spent when a delicious lunch
was served by the hostess and
Mrs. Keil.
GORRIE
Little Karen King returned
home Thursday from Wingham
Hospital.
Miss Margaret Ilastie,
Guelph and Mr. Thos. ilastie,
Toronto, spent the week -end
at the hone of Mr. and Mrs.
Kenneth Hastie.
, Mr. and Mrs. Richard Car-
son, Mr. and Mrs. Lionel John-
ston are motoring to Florida and
other points.
The Woman's Auxiliary of
St. Stephen's Anglican Church,
Gorrie, will meet at the home
of Mrs. Norman Wade, on
Thursday, January filth at 2.30
p.m. Roll call, "A New Year's
Motto", (Biblical).
