R. 1, Owen Sound. On November 8, George and Azelda Bothwell were charged under Section 218 of the Criminal Code that they did "unlawfully abandon Mary Bothwell, a child under the age of 10, thereby endan- gering its life ..." The event occurred at the Bothwell's farm in early July. Reportedly, Azelda Bothwell took their eldest son to town for an early morning swimming lesson, leaving George in charge of the other children. Mary, then two years old, was up- stairs sleeping. George and the other children took the truck to another farm for a quick check. Another requirement was that the Bothwells' eldest son take a babysitting course. An in -court settlement was reached on August 17. The Bothwell's were informed by the Children's Aid Society that the society's file on the case was closed September 30. But last month, on November 8, the summonses under the Criminal Code, one for George and one for Azelda Bothwell, were drawn up; they were delivered November 9. Ken Rae, Grey County crown attorney, says the fact that the Bothwell case was settled in Family Court does not preclude charges under the Criminal Code. George Bothwell himself, a well- known farm activist who is facing charges under a provincial statute deal- ing with the Bankruptcy Act, was in
