soil testing, composting, and pesti-
cides (if you must) to companion
planting, harvesting, and sources of
seeds. This is a handy reference book,
but it makes such great reading that
you will want to consume the whole
thing at least once before relegating it
to the reference shelf by the easy
chair.
On a final note: We listen and try
to tape Al Maitland's Christmas story-
telling on CBC radio. He reads such
classics as The Gift of the Magi by O.
Henry, Christmas at Dingley Dell by
Charles Dickens, and Is There a Santa
Claus? from the New York Sun. I
discovered a lovely slim volume at the
library with these stories and more.
The Christmas Eve Reader: Selec-
tions from A Christmas Feast was
edited by James Charlton and Barbara
Gibson and published by Doubleday
and Company in 1977.
As well as searching for this title
in the used book stores, I am keeping
an eye open for another treasure titled
Christmas in Canada, by Mary Barber
and Flora McPherson and published
by J. M. Dent & Sons (Canada) Ltd.
i
Christmas is the one celebration in the
year when we seem to draw upon each
other's cultures to understand and cel-
ebrate the whole drama of Christianity
and the birth of the Christ Child. This
volume of stories and poems is all
about Canadian celebrations of Christ-
mas: Christmas mass in Quebec in
1645, a carol sung by the Hurons, and
a Klondyke Christmas baby wrapped
in long woollen underwear.
The early settlers all drew upon
customs they brought from their
homelands, but this country has
coloured and molded some of those
ideas and customs and flavoured the
whole celebration of Christmas with
stories and events that could only
happen here.
On that happy note, may you
celebrate your holiday season with
family and friends and enjoy the
customs of the old world blended with
the new.0
