FEEDBACK
Tillage & Organic Methods
Adrian Vos' article on organic
agriculture and false advertising was
most informative. Unfortunately,
however, he appears to have attributed
the current trend to minimum tillage
to the efforts of "organic" advocates.
In reality, organic groups have
promoted increased tillage and tradi-
tional plowing as a means of achiev-
ing weed and pest control. A tour of
organic/ecological farms last July, for
example, revealed cases where the soil
surface in mid -summer was com-
monly crop -residue free.
Credit for the movement towards
reduced tillage, crop rotations, and
improved soil conservation practices
should more properly be directed to
groups such as the county Soil and
Crop Improvement Associations,
conservation authorities, and leader-
ship provided by OMAF and the
agricultural colleges.0

On Organic Food
In regard to the column in your
November issue entitled Questions
of False Advertising, by Adrian Vos,
I, as an organic farmer, would like to
give him a few arguments regarding
his claim that ttiere is no difference
between organically grown and
conventionally produced food.
First of all, let's make no mistake
in assuming that all food sold in our
stores is tested by the government or
our universities. Only samples are
taken on a sporadic basis and tested!
In a report published in the Owen
Sound Sun Times on May 23, 1989,
Peter Saschenbrecker, acting director
of product assessment and analysis in
the Agri -Food Safety Division, is
quoted as saying that his department
