WHAT'S NEW
"MOM" OFFERS
TLC TO PIGLETS
The Shur -Gain Division of Canada
Packers Inc. hopes to lower the pre -
weaning mortality rate in piglets with its
new MOM survival system.
The system uses an artificial sow
feeding device which dispenses chilled
liquid milk replacer automatically.
Orphan or runt piglets feed on an
actual sow for a minimum of 12 hours
before they are introduced to MOM.
The MOM machine, which sells for
just under $1,000, is complemented by a
number of products developed by Shur -
Gain to promote piglet survival.
These products include: Launch, a
liquid milk replacer; Vital, a dried
colostrum concentrate; Survive, an en-
ergy paste; and Prep, an extra -fortified
feed for early weaned pigs.
Improvements in pre -weaning mor-
tality have lagged behind other areas of
pork production, says Dr. John Brennan,
chief scientist on the MOM research
team. "Pre -weaning mortality has hov-
ered at 18 to 20 per cent for decades now,
and we recognized that there was a tre-
mendous potential for improvement."
Field research has demonstrated pre -
weaning mortality rates as low as 5 per
cent with the MOM system, he says.
"That last piglet is often the differ-
ence between profit and loss on a litter,"
he adds, "so that runt or orphan piglet
also has the greatest potential for
profit."
The MOM device features: an insu-
lated milk reservoir to prevent the heat-
ing of pre -cooled milk, a timer which
activates a buzzer and pump at one-hour
intervals — volume per feeding is con-
trolled by adjusting the duration of
pumping (2 to 10 seconds), and a cali-
bration cylinder to verify that the set vol-
ume is delivered by the pump.0
