The keys are: having feedstuffs analyzed, getting rations formulated, calibrating meter mills regularly, ensur- ing accurate weights and mixing time with batch mixers, and having finished feeds assayed. Daco, which offers customers cali- bration and feed testing services, re- cently started its Feed Certification Program to ensure the consistency of a batch of feed. The service was a response to the concern about residue in pork from feed medications. Nine samples are taken during the time it takes to unload a batch. Or, where meter mills are used, the nine samples are taken over 15 to 30 minutes. Then the co -efficient of variation (CV), set at +10 per cent or less, is calculated. To date, Daco reports, 75 feed - manufacturing systems have been checked, 33 of them meter mills and 42 of them mixers of various types. Daco adds that 30 of the meter mills were under 7 per cent CV. One mill was more than 10 per cent CV because of a malfunctioning proportioner, and the other 2 mills ran out of an ingredient during testing. After testing the 42 mixers, 4 were found to be over the 10 per cent CV limit. Daco offered to re -test, but before the second test changes were suggested for the loading sequence of feed ingredi- ents and/or longer mixing times. The length of the mixing time seems to be the most important factor to achieve a uniform ration, says Art Putz. And horizontal ribbon or paddle mixers should not be overloaded. For example, material should only be loaded to the height of the shaft or a little bit above. Three of the four mixers, Putz says, were re -tested, with results under 10 per cent CV. The producer with the fourth mixer said he was not prepared to make half a batch with his ribbon mixer, and that his pigs were doing well. He ac- commodated the mixer by starting to feed at different pens each time.0
