while the other 50 per cent comes from
off -farm work, a rise of 10 per cent since
the early '70s.
And the data say nothing about the
investment risk or the work involved in
generating the income. Jones gives the
example of a farmer with an $800,000
farm. This person would have more
debt, labour problems, and production
decisions to contend with than a person
driving a bus.
Jones says it was difficult to define a
farm family. The final definition in-
cluded households in which at least one
individual had net farm income as his
major source of income. This elimi-
nated hobby farms and very small op-
erations from the analysis.0

ADVERTISE THE MILK
MARKETING SYSTEM?
With intemational trade negotia-
tions exerting increasing pressure on
Canada's supply -management system
for milk products, the Ontario Milk
Marketing Board should consider ad-
vertising not just the benefits of milk,
but the benefits of orderly marketing for
milk, says the National Farmers Union.
Public support is needed to preserve
the stability of the industry, said NFU
Ontario co-ordinator John Dowling in a
recent presentation to the OMMB.0
