NEW SOIL & WATER
BUREAU AT GUELPH
Farmers should find it easier to get
information about soil and water con-
servation now that an information bu-
reau is being set up within the Centre for
Soil and Water Conservation at the
University of Guelph.
Funded by Agriculture Canada, the
bureau is managed by Doug Robinson,
past president of the Ontario chapter of
the Soil Conservation Society of Amer-
ica and a member of the Ontario Institute
of Agrologists. Robinson also brings to
the position more than 30 years of expe-
rience in agricultural communications.
The bureau, he says, will be estab-
lishing a computer network of soil and
water experts and information sources
using both Canadian and U.S. research
reports.
Located at the University of Guelph
campus in the Land Resource Science
Building, the bureau is administered by
the university as a project of the Soil and
Water Environmental Enhancement
Program (SWEEP).0

USING HERBICIDES
Scientists with Agriculture Canada
are recommending that farmers wear
cotton pants, T-shirts, coveralls, wool
socks, rubber boots, nitrile or neoprene
gloves, and hard hats when spraying
herbicides.
"We've found that two layers of
cotton clothing provide a protection
three to eight times higher than bare
skin," says Dr. Allan Cessna.
He adds that while less than one per
cent of chemical contamination occurs
through inhalation, 99 per cern of
chemical contamination ends up on the
skin.0
