The Rural Voice, 1989-07, Page 7FEEDBACK
Canadian farms. The consumer would
experience an increase in food prices
after liberalization and subsidy elim-
ination (Roningen & Dixit 1988). The
only one to benefit is the taxpayer, but
is it realistic to expect a corresponding
reduction in taxes?
Ken Monteith, MP for Elgin, is
quoted as saying "things are not nearly
as bad as yesterday's sensational head-
lines would have us believe." The
reason we no longer see "sensational
headlines" has more to do with news-
paper policy, as evidenced by the
departure of Gord Wainman from the
Free Press, than the reality of the farm
crisis today. Dr. George Brinkman of
the University of Guelph says that in
actual terms, net farm income in
Ontario last year was as low as it was
in the great depression.
It is irresponsible of Leishman to
advocate the repression of one farm
sector in favour of other commodities.
Food security should be the main
concern of all Canadians, consumers
and farmers. This means supporting
the production of as great a variety of
food in Canada as our climate will
allow to avoid becoming dangerously
dependent on other countries.
Agriculture continues to evolve
and as farmers we know that although
existing systems are not perfect the
alternatives are likely to create unique
problems of their own. We're just not
so eager to "throw the baby out with
the bath water."0

I only "discovered" The Rural
Voice late last year, when I added it
to my already excessive list of sub-
scriptions. From the first issue, I
have been delighted, if somewhat
surprised, that there is a "farm and
rural" magazine of this quality
publishing in these times.
From my perspective, the May
issue is the best yet. Each of the
pincipal "features" takes an honest
and positive approach to the real
nature of issues and problems, and
the quality of writing is excellent.0
