BOOSTING PIGLET PERFORMANCE
Starting
Off Right
By Dave Bates
Ontario Nutrition Manager
Shur'Gain
The first few weeks of a piglet's life are critical. The rations that
the young pig receives before weaning and during the transition
period onto full feed can affect mortality, feed conversion, growth
rate and, eventually, days -to -market.
In order to achieve top performance with early weaning, proper
nutrient levels and maximum acceptability are necessary. The
piglet's digestive system is still developing, so the `first feed" must
also contain highly digestible ingredients.
Shur*Gain Perfo-Pork Pre -Weaning Feed for Pigs is a
major breakthrough in improving rate and efficiency of gain
without digestive upset. More than 25 different ingredients are
used to supply highly digestible nutrients prior to and during the
weaning period.
For example, the feed is very high in lysine without the use of
soybean meal, which can cause immunity response problems in
the gut. Other ingredients such as cooked grains, fishmeal, milk
proteins and fats ensure palatability. Our very small pellets are
ideal in size and texture for the piglet.
In the critical post -weaning period, there are many stresses that
can lead to poor performance and reduce profitability.
Shur*Gain's Advanced Formula High Nutrient Complex
Weanling -Starter ration should be introduced in small
quantities a few days after weaning. Our inclusion of neutral
salts of organic acids ensures optimum digestive tract pH for
more complete protein and energy utilization. Feed piglets
limited amounts of fresh feed 3 or 4 times daily to avoid stomach
upset and ensure a smooth transition to full feed 7 to 10 days
after weaning.
The starting period is an important part of the pig's race to
market. Young pigs convert feed very efficiently, so the use of a
complex diet is a key to profitability.
