SEEDING PASTURE
THE "NATURAL" WAY
Have you considered using your ani-
mals to reseed your pastures?
Many desirable pasture plants pro-
duce seeds that can pass through the gut
of cattle or sheep. Clover and trefoil arc
good examples, because the hard -
coated seeds are excreted with the
manure and will germinate as the ma-
nure breaks down.
Two approaches to reseeding pas-
tures using animals can be taken. The
simplest way is to feed small amounts of
seed, less than a pound, mixed with
grain once in a while during the grazing
season.
The other technique is to establish a
small area (1 to 2 acres) of desired spe-
cies (e.g. trefoil) or fence off a similarly
sized area that already contains a good
population of the desired plants.
Allow the area to go to seed before
the animals graze it. The animals are
then turned out into the area to be re-
seeded. Seed is excreted by animals
about 24 to 72 hours after being eaten.
These techniques don't result in an
overnight change. The improvement is
gradual and may take three to four years.
They are, however, a cheap, easy
way to reseed. They are also very useful
methods for maintaining good pastures
and can be used each year to keep the
plants you want in the pasture.O
