ADVICE
LUPIN CROPS ARE
UP AND COMING
In recent years, there has been inter-
est among dairy and hog producers in
lupins as a homegrown protein source.
Lupins are a legume crop containing
about 38 per cent fat and 11 per cent
fibre on a dry matter basis. They can be
fed to dairy or beef cattle, or hogs with-
out heat treatment, at up to 20 per cent of
the ration. The fibre level of 11 per cent
should be kept in mind when consider-
ing lupins for growing finishing hogs.
Lupins are being promoted over
soybeans as a protein source because
they don't require heat treatment prior to
feeding.
Possible advantages of lupins:
1. They are quite resistant to frost.
2. Yield potential under ideal condi-
tions is up to 70 bushels per acre.
3. Pods of lupins are produced on top
of the plant, so harvest losses with con-
ventional combine headers may be less
than with soybeans (note that shatter
losses can be higher, however).
4. Lupins are excellent nitrogen
fixers (up to 150 pounds/acre). But it is
not clear how much of this is left for the
following crop.
5. The $25 to $30 per tonne cost for
custom heat treating of soybeans can be
saved with lupins.
Possible advantages of soybeans:
1. Soybeans grow well over a wide
range of soil textures and pH. Lupins do
not yield well on clay loam soils, or
when pH is more than 7.0.
2. There is a well-developed, reli-
able production recipe for soybeans and
yields do not usually fall below 25 bush-
els per acre. There have been some
complete crop failures with lupins.
3. Lupins have two or three short
flushes of flowering and unfavourable
weather at these times can have a disas-
trous effect on yields.
4. Weed control in soybeans is usu-
ally reliable. With lupins, weed control
has been a major problem, both in the
first few weeks and in August.
5. Seed costs for lupins are higher.
