AGRICULTURE WILL
GAIN PROMINENCE,
CARDIFF SAYS
There was only one "member" at the
Meet the Members dinner sponsored by
the Bruce County Federation of Agri-
culture (BCFA) last month.
Murray Cardiff, MP for Huron -
Bruce, who was recently appointed
secretary to Deputy Prime Minister and
federal Minister of Agriculture Don
Mazankowski, was the sole target for
questions from Bruce County farmers.
In response to a question from the
floor about whether agriculture would
take a back scat to Mazankowski's other
commitments, Cardiff assured the audi-
ence that agriculture would now be "on
a pedestal" and would gain prominence.
The BCFA, in its brief presented at
the meeting, stated that though the On-
tario economy is booming, the agricul-
tural economy is not.
The federation asked the provincial
government to reaffirm its long-term
commitment to agriculture, adding that
recent agricultural programs were an-
nounced for political gain and were
grossly under -funded (eg., the Land
Stewardship Program and Farm -Start).
OFFIRR, one of the most widely ac-
cepted programs, should be reinstated
immediately, the BCFA said.
Also in the brief was a request for co-
operation between the federal and pro-
vincial governments in the areas of crop
insurance, free trade, negotiations and
settlements, and land stewardship.
The chairman of the Farm Credit Co -
corporation has admitted that farm debt
review board cases were handled differ-
ently in Ontario, the BCFA said. The
federation attributes this difference to
the effect of an urban -driven real estate
market on farm sales. It asked that the
farm debt review board process be equal
for all fanners.
Ted Zcttel, on behalf of the Ecologi-
cal Farmers Association of Ontario
(EFAO), said that continuing to move to
a more competitive style of marketing
will be detrimental to human resources
and the land will suffer.
There is a rapidly growing member-
ship in the EFAO, he said, because of
well-documented and publicized issues
