room for the extra sheep," he says, but
only "if they would have gone after
some control of the New Zealand ex-
ports."
"The agency," he says, "should have
combined promotion and production
simultaneously."
Fitzgerald, along with five other
local sheep farmers, is a member of the
Grey -Bruce Lamb Company, an inde-
pendent group which has been success-
ful wholesaling its own lamb. The
Grey -Bruce Lamb Company, he says,
stressed promotion first, then supply.
Louise Maree, former chairperson of
District 2, is also a member of the Grey -
Bruce Lamb Company. But despite the
company's independent success, she
says she's voting in favour of retaining
OSMA. Having an agency means po-
tential, if nothing else.
"What are we going to do with noth-
ing?"
She identifies four main complaints
with OSMA: (1) that producers were
forced to join, (2) that the agency hasn't
moved fast enough, (3), that the staff and
office in Toronto are "too grand," and
(4) that OSMA could potentially get "a
tremendous amount of power under the
Farm Products Marketing Act."
But Maree says that even if there are
flaws in OSMA, improvements can be
made if the agency stays in place.
Fitzgerald too, despite his frustra-
tions with OSMA, says he'll be working
within the agency should the yes vote
prevail. He says he'll be lobbying other
districts and trying to get "hard-core
sheep producers" on the board of
directors.OLG
OFA REJECTS FEE
OFFER FROM OCA
At a Meeting March 22 the Ontario
Federation of Agriculture board of di-
rectors gave the Ontario Cattlemen's
Association two weeks to commit itself
to a minimum $20,000 fee for 1989
membership in the OFA.
A $10,000 fee offer from the OCA
was rejected. The OFA had asked for
$26,000, reassessed from $832 in previ-
ous years.
OFA directors noted that one com-
modity board with only 800 members
paid $21,000 to the OFA last year.0
