VETERAN FARMERS HONOURED BY PEERS
Wednesday, March 22 — Bruce
County Soil and Crop Improvement
Association (BCSCIA) members and
interested farmers took time out from
their cropping, marketing, and manage-
ment seminars at the Bruce County Seed
Fair to honour two long -active members
of the farm community.
In the photo, BCSCIA president
James Fischer looks over some of the
exhibits at the fair in Formosa with
Andy McTavish (middle) and Jim
Richardson (right) before presenting
them with Ontario Soil and Crop Im-
provement Association (OSCIA) 50th
anniversary Awards of Merit.
Andy McTavish, still an active par-
ticipant in community affairs in Walker-
ton, was one of the original directors of
the BCSCIA in 1939. In the intervening
years he has served as district director on
the OSCIA, president of the Bruce asso-
ciation, OSCIA president, and in 1956
as chairman of a committee set up to
improve the development and distribu-
tion of certified seed. From 1969 to
1971 he was president of the Canadian
Seed Growers Association.
Along the way he was also active in
the Ontario Cattleman's Association,
serving a term as president in the late
1950s. In 1971 he joined Stewart Seeds,
later Ciba Geigy, as regional sales
manager in charge of dealer and market
development.
In 1981 he joined Speare Seeds of
Harriston, helping the company to mar-
ket its new line of com hybrids. He was
one of the 100 recipients of the OMAF
Centennial Awards last year.
Jim Richardson of Walkerton also
helped to organize the founding of the
BCSCIA and served as president in
1962-63. He has been active in the
Walkerton Agricultural Society for
more than 50 years, and has never
missed a fair or an annual meeting.
An exhibitor at local and national
shows, he has been international cham-
pion for his turnips eight times at the
Royal Winter Fair. He has long service
with the Ontario Plowman's Associa-
tion and in 1985 his was the host farm for
the International Plowing Match.
Richardson was presented with the
Tommy Cooper Award for his contribu-
tions to agriculture by the Bruce Federa-
tion of Agriculture in 1962.0
