GIANT VACUUM
SUCKS UP PESTS
A new system of pest control for
strawberries is blurring the distinction
between housework and farming.
Growers in California arc using a
giant vacuum to suck pests off their
plants much the same way as the house-
hold vacuum sucks dust out of carpets.
The "Bugvac" is allowing growers to
use less insecticide and preserve the
predators and parasites living in the
crop.
Its inventor, Edgar Show, got the
idea from a hand-held vacuum sampler
commonly used by entomologists. He
approached an equipment manufacturer
and arranged to have an upscale version
built to mount on a tractor and cover four
rows of strawberries at a pass.
The insects sucked off the upper
leaves accelerate to speeds of 50 kph
before hitting the fan inside the vacuum,
reports the January issue of New Scien-
tist magazine. The insects are killed and
then blown back onto the field.
The process is keeping lygus bug
populations down to a "manageable
level" without insecticides. Predatory
insects and mites, freed from the pres-
sure of insecticides, can then keep the
remaining pests in check.0
