OFEMA IS SERVING
THE SHORT -LINERS
The Ontario Farm Equipment
Manufacturers Association (OFEMA),
in its second year, is well on its way to
providing a central organization for a
diverse group that includes owners of
small fabrication shops as well as large
manufacturing operations.
Harvey Kuntz, president of
OFEMA, says that at last count about
"three dozen" short -line equipment
manufacturers had sent in their $150
membership fee, and the organization is
looking forward to having more of the
estimated 200 independent manufac-
turers in Ontario join up.
OFEMA's immediate goals include
developing farm machinery safety,
promoting exports, improving technical
and advice services, and liaison with
government.
"We're there to help each other.
That's our reason for being," says
Kuntz, who is president of Kuntz
Manufacturing Inc. in St. Jacobs, a
company producing hay saver feeders,
bale spears, and livestock accessories.
The concern that initially brought
the organizers of OFEMA together a
year ago was the recently passed Farm
Implements Act.
Short -line manufacturers worry
about the "buy-back" clause in the
legislation, which they say could be
used by an equipment dealer to make a
distributor repurchase all goods sold to
the dealer over three years when those
goods remain in the dealer's stock.
But, says Kuntz, there's not much
that OFEMA can do about the clause at
this point.
OFEMA's nearest relation in
Canada is its successful prairie cousin,
PIMA (Prairie Implement Manufac-
turers Association). Input from Ron
Zimmer, general manager of PIMA, and
Brent Hamre of the Canadian Farm
Industrial Equipment Institute helped to
put OFEMA on the road.
