MACHINERY
NAME: Wayne O'Rourke
COMPANY: Huron Tractor
(Walkerton) Ltd.
LINES CARRIED/
PARTS MANUFACTURED: John Deere
OUTLOOK FOR 1989: 1989 looks better
than 1988. Inventory is very low and
will not improve for 1989. Good used
equipment is hard to find. Poor used
equipment is and always has been
plentiful.
BUSINESS CHANGES
AND ADJUSTMENTS: Using a computer
has given us the largest cost saving in the
'80s. We have taken on several con-
sumer product lines and are spending
much more time on parts and service
selling.
INNOVATIONS OR DEVELOPMENTS:
Leasing is growing in popularity every
year and will continue. Minimum
tillage tools will be used more but
availability will still be a problem.
BUYING PATTERNS: Farmers arc
shopping in a larger area.
EQUIPMENT CARE: It is very important
to inspect machines before the season's
use. Machines are older and require
more maintenance.
PROGNOSIS: The beef business does
not seem to be recovering as well as
other segments of the industry. We are
going to see larger farms and fewer, and
perhaps more land owned by large
corporations to produce their own
goods. The 100 -acre farm is now a
retirement farm. There will be only
three major farm machinery companies
left, plus off -shore.
