The Rural Voice, 1989-04, Page 37r MACHINERY manuals, which is creating costly repairs and downtime. We conducted a service meeting for Magnum owners on February 21; there was 50 per cent attendance for 16 units sold. PROGNOSIS: Farm equipment in the '90s will become very computerized. Products are increasing in price and sales rebates arc dropping off. NAME: Jack Nickel COMPANY: Midwestern Equipment (Listowel) Ltd. LINES CARRIED/ PARTS MANUFACTURED: MF agricultural and industrial, Kubota, Gehl, New Idea, Kongskilde, Hardi, Vicon, and Great Plains seed drills OUTLOOK FOR 1989: Inventories are low compared to a few years ago. Manufacturers are not building extra equipment. Sales volumes at our dealership continue to rise. The general outlook is very positive. BUSINESS CHANGES AND ADJUSTMENTS: We have computerized our whole business this year. We have vied to keep our help all year round, sending them to training schools to have the best mechanics and parts people possible. We have not reduced inventory, the problem being that if we don't have it quite often we would lose the sale. INNOVATIONS OR DEVELOPMENTS: The trend in tractors is to elecvonics, with MF leading the way, having the first electronic tractor on the market eight years ago. Kubota has just introduced some new units that are very interesting; eg. 4 WD and bi-speed turn. All companies are constantly updating their equipment. BUYING PATTERNS: We are seeing a small trend to more buying out of season rather than the day they need it. EQUIPMENT CARE: I would definitely advise farmers to service their equipment in the off season if possible. Then there is more time to evaluate parts needed and get them installed correctly. PROGNOSIS: The Farm Machinery Act will cause companies to be more aware of the farmer's needs but will also in- crease the price of parts and equipment. We have not seen the end of amal- gamations as we are currently hearing of a large company on the sales block.
