WHAT'S NEW
SILAGE INOCULANT
IS REGISTERED
Qwik-N-Sile silage inoculant, re-
cently registered by Agriculture Can-
ada, is manufactured by Chr. Hansen's
Laboratory, Inc. of Milwaukee, Wis-
consin. The firm earlier received regis-
tration for Biomax SI silage inoculant.
Qwik-N-Sile is a granular product
applied dry while Biomax SI is applied
with water. Both products contain a
specific strain of Lactobacillus plan-
tarum bacteria, selected for its ability to
enhance fermentation.
During ensiling, dry matter losses
average 15 per cent. With silage valued
at $25 to $35 per ton, this can result in
significant economic losses.
A recent study conducted with
Qwik-N-Sile at the University of
Guelph by Dr. Buchanan -Smith re-
sulted in increased silage intake and
total dry matter intake in cows. There
was a tendency towards higher milk
production and fat yields. In addition,
overall nutrient recovery in silage was
enhanced and higher levels of lactic acid
were measured.
Qwik-N-Sile and Biomax SI will be
marketed in Canada through feed com-
panies by Horan -Lally, located in Mis-
sissauga, Ontario. Horan -Lally is a
wholly-owned subsidiary of Chr.
Hansen's Laboratory, Inc.0
BALER BAGGER
HANDLES VARIETY
The new Beco Baler Bagger is a
computerized, automatic machine that
will bale a wide variety of products,
including chopped alfalfa, wool, cotton,
feathers, hops, chopped straw for mush-
room bedding, and wood shavings and
sawdust for livestock bedding.
The bagger, operated by one man,
takes 208.9 pounds of force per square
inch on the platen. It can reduce the size
of a standard 70 -pound bale of chopped
alfalfa with molasses added for protein
to a very dense 18 -inch bale, which is
very desirable for export.
