The Rural Voice, 1989-02, Page 27NEWS buying, using, and transporting pesti- cides will have to have certification. "No longer will you be able to send a wife, brother-in-law, or neighbour to pick up your chemicals unless thay have taken the course. And if you have food- stuff on board, you can't legally trans- port chemicals." "Possession of chemicals indicates liability," says Hazlitt, but "you do not possess the product until the bill is signed." A chemical spill caused by a farmer is his responsibilty and he must clean it up and report it if the spill is an environmental hazard. The pesticide safety course is inten- sive. By mid-morning, participants knew that LD50 meant "the statistical estimate of a chemical dose which, when administered, will kill 50 per cent of the test animals within a stated obser- vation period." They also realized that they, as farm- ers, were handling extremely toxic chemicals. Hazlitt says that the LD50 value could be a consideration when buying a product. By mid-afternoon, with the use of videos, a manual, and discussion, par- ticipants covered topics including: pes- ticide toxicity, signs of acute and chronic poisoning, label interpretation, proper selection of safety equipment and clothing, calibration procedures, transportation and storage of pesticides, and disposal of chemical containers. The course was followed by an open - book examination. The grade required to earn acertificate is 75 percent, and the certificate will be valid at the time the course becomes mandatory. On this day, all participants passed, and they all realized that the ultimate re- sponsibilty for pesticide safety rests with the user.0 SG To report a spill, call 1-800-268- 6060; to contact the Poison Information Centre, call 1-800-268-9017; for infor- mation on Grower Pesticide Safety Courses, contact your local pesticide dealer or local OMAF office.
