ve said before that one of the
most remarkable things about the
agricultural community is the dedica-
tion and talent among farm leaders.
Not only do they work more than full-
time on their farms, but they somehow
manufacture the days to work on
behalf of their neighbours, whether
next door or across the province.
One such leader is Ontario
Federation of Agriculture vice-
president Roger George. While he's
away on federation business for about
half the days in the year, his wife
Rosemary is back in Powassan mind-
ing their hog and sheep operation.
And they've made this tough schedule
work, scaling down their farm and
intensifying their commitment to
agriculture. Editor Lise Gunby visits
their Powassan farm this month.
Also in this issue, agricultural
researcher Ian Wylie-Toal examines
the issue of manure management.
Handling this natural resource has
been quite a headache in Europe, but
Ian finds that Canadian farmers,
blessed with a healthy density of
livestock relative to land area, have
done a good job of keeping the
countryside free of the problems
associated with manure. He offers
some practical advice to help farmers
keep up the good work.
And agronomist Mervyn Erb is
eager for the corn season to roll
around again. To help growers get a
head start. he offers some advice on
tuning up for the corn crop. As he
notes, the state of your corn planter
can make a big difference in the fields
this corning fall.
