The Rural Voice, 1989-01, Page 56BRUCE • County Federation of Agriculture NEWSLETTER The Rural Voice is provided to Bruce County federation members by the BCFA. 446 10th St., Hanover, Ontario N4N 1P9 519-364-3050 ONWARD IN '89 As 1989 gets started, the Bruce County Federation of Agriculture is preparing itself for another busy year. 1988 closed off with the BCFA taking a positive outlook on how we are going to approach the farm situation. We fully realize that the farm financial situation has not improved for many farmers and others are seeing their position deteriorate after a diffi- cult 1988. Many of the old problems still exist and we are not going to ignore the people involved in these problems. We have reaffirmed our position to help organizations such as the Queen's Bush Ministry in meeting their mandate to help farm families. Having said this, I believe our organization must also be looking to the future. We have to build upon the positives that exist in the farm com- munity. To do so, we must look back upon our successes and failures and use these as building blocks. To achieve this goal, we have struck a special committee to establish where we would like to see agriculture 10 years down the road. This commit- tee as well will recommend ways to assure a farm future for our members. Under the chairmanship of Gerry Poechman, it will be looking for ideas from any and all sources and you may forward your thoughts to Gerry through our office in Hanover. We will also be looking at ways to get our membership more involved. We believe it is very important to get this involvement to keep our organiza- tion in touch with the community. To achieve this goal, our meetings committee will be setting up special interest meetings throughout 1989. As the new president of BCFA, I am very pleased at the quality of dir- ectors on our board. They represent a very broad spectrum of the farm com- munity and bring a very diversified base of experience and ideas to your county federation. We have many new electors to blend in with our older veterans to give a good sense of direction for the BCFA. The 1980s have been hard times membership -wise for the BCFA. For 54 THE RURAL VOICE the first time in many years, our repre- sentation on the Ontario Federation of Agriculture board has dropped to three. We will be trying very hard in '89 to regain our fourth voice. When a federation representative calls on you in 1989 for a member- ship, consider the pluses. You have the opportunity to get good prices on equipment from the Ontario Farm Machinery Agency. You receive The Rural Voice and Farm & Country free. Your membership gives you a voice in a recognized lobby organization. You share in the gains we make and we only ask that you help shoul- der the cost of achieving these pro- grams that put dollars in your pocket every year. It is up to you to help the BCFA to ensure that there is a profit- able future for farmers. As our motto says: "In Unity there's Strength." The time has come for us all to look ahead. Help us to be a proactive federation planning for the future instead of a reaction group responding to others' failings.0 Ron Garland BCFA EXECUTIVE DIRECTORS Allan Smith, Bob Bregman, C.
