This month, two commodity brokers begin a series on farm markets. Wily mar- keting can make the difference for hard-pressed farmers, and commodity brokers can offer more than a few helpful hints. Business acumen has become an indispensable input in modern agriculture. And putting all the eggs in one basket has never been good policy. One New Year's wish might be that farmers and urban neighbours recognize that quality is often more fulfilling than quantity. Reporter Bob Reid writes about "The Egg Money," a small sum but one that represents some of the traditions that make farming a family affair. And we've been saving Andrew Dixon' s reminiscences about woodcut- ting in winter. With his magic touch he brings to life the trials and triumphs of boyhood on the farm. The beef business has been hit hard in recent years. But beef producers, whatever their opinions about the structure of their industry, are a determined group. This month Mary Lou Weiser-Ilamilton visits the Fischers of Grey County, whose dedication has kept them going through tough times. And there's more: articles and news that we hope will instruct or entertain or both. The rural commu- nity is a dynamic one, and there's never a dearth of stories to tell. We always welcome your comments and suggestions — please feel free to call or drop in at our office. In the meantime, here's wishing you a wonderful New Year.O
