One of the quickest ways to decrease milk produc- tion is to shut off a cow's water supply (milk contains about 87 per cent water). Frozen water pipes and waterers or in- frequent watering often show up as re- duced milk production. There seems to be no advantage to heating water much above freezing tem- peratures. But a big drink of cold water may lower the temperature in a cow's rumen for a few hours, enough to reduce digestion. So the heat produced during the normal fermentation of feeds may be reduced for a while.0 TIPS ON HEATING HOUSE WITH WOOD Interest in residential heating with wood is expanding. So is the market for wood -burning equipment. But before you make the switch to wood, you should know something about the dif- ferent wood -burning appliances on the market. There are two general categories of wood -burning appliances: stoves and furnaces. A radiant stove (as its name implies) radiates heat in all directions. Heat is passed to the air and to heat -absorbing surfaces. The hot surface of a circulating stove, by contrast, is encased in a metal jacket. Air circulates through air vents in this metal shell via convection or a fan. When considering the quality of wood -heating stoves, choose a model that is airtight. Airtight stoves maxi- mize efficiency by controlling the amount and location of air entry into the firebox, thus regulating the rate at which the fire burns. There are also different types of wood furnaces. Forced -air furnaces consist of a fire- box and a heat exchanger. The flue gases leave the firebox and flow through the heat exchanger, where air is heated and circulated through the house via sheet metal heating ducts. Another alternative is to heat your home with wood -fired boilers. Boilers are connected to pipes and radiators so that heat is distributed to several rooms by means of hot water. (cont'd)
