NORMAN ALEXANDER
The full house at the Huron Soil and
Crop annual in Holmesville was, how-
ever, missing a familiar and highly re-
spected member, Norman Alexander of
Clinton, who died October 25, 1988 in
his 78th year.

Norman Alexander
Alexander's work in soil and water
conservation not only did much to eam
Huron County's reputation as a leader in
soil conservation, but has been influen-
tial internationally. In 1981, the Soil
Conservation Society of America pre-
sented him with its Honor Award.
In 1983, the HSCIA, in conjunction
with the Ausable-Bayfield Conserva-
tion Authority, established the Norman
Alexander Conservation Award, pre-
sented every January to a Huron County
farmer judged to have contributed most
to soil conservation in the previous year.
In 1984, Alexander opened the
Foodland Stewardship Centre, offering
information and erosion -control de-
vices to farmers. Alexander also built a
soil and water management display
which travelled to public events as an il-
lustration of the conservation message.
In 1987, when the Maitland Valley
Conservation Authority established a
conservation award, Alexander was the
first recipient.
As HCSCIA president Walter Mcll-
wain noted at the meeting, Norman
Alexander will be deeply missed.OLG
