FARMERS REACH
OUT TO CONSUMERS
"Agriculture in Bruce County is
changing," notes Ken McKinnon, vice-
chairman of the Canadian Dairy Com-
mission, adding that these changes are
of direct concern to the consumer.

Speaking during Agri -Food Week,
McKinnon outlined the changes of the
past decade. Foreign investment has be-
come a major factor, with commodity
trading and large tracts of land in the
hands of investors from abroad. Tech-
nology has made farmers more efficient
"to the point where attention needs to be
paid to marketing." Farm financing has
become a major concern.
While recognizing the recent decline
of the family farm, McKinnon says he
believes it may make a comeback.
"Agriculture will flourish best under
owner -operated business" and "mixed
farming may be the answer for good
environmental management."
McKinnon is convinced that con-
sumers want to support local farmers.
Consumers are looking for safe, reliable
products of high quality, and agriculture
must do a better job of communicating
with the public about Ontario -grown
food. That, of course, is the reason for
Ontario's annual Agri -Food Week.O
