The Rural Voice, 1988-11, Page 6HOW GOOD IS YOUR HAY?
You can't tell just by looking!
Hay can vary from 6% to 25% protein (on a dry
matter basis). Calcium on hay can range from
0.40% to 1.7%. Other nutrients can also show
wide variation.
An accurate chemical analysis of your hay and
other feed products will give you the answer.
For more information, call or write and inquire about
our feed and forage testing services.

FEEDBACK
PATRIOTISM AND
FREE TRADE
I must say there is a lot of talk
regarding so-called "free trade." I
think the column in the September
issue by Adrian Vos was well done.
In most of the talk and rhetoric one
has to try to separate fact from fiction.
I too believe we can compete with the
U.S. if we play on an even field. And
some of the gopher holes on that field
are made in Canada! Last summer I
talked with a steel worker from
Hamilton and I asked him: can you
compete with the Americans? He said
we can compete with anybody, given a
chance.
Most of our problems originate
here in Canada, not in the U.S. There
is the lament about American grapes.
Across the border is New York's
grape -growing area. How do they
compete with Californi,,? Then there's
the story about oil. Dome Petroleum,
the oil company into which the
government poured a lot of money,
has now gone bankrupt and has been
bought by Amoco, an American
company, for $3 billion. It must have
some potential!
Recently I was in the U.S. and
bought gas for 87 cents to $1.07 a
gallon. And I was in a friend's home
purchased in a new subdivision Last
year — corner lot, three bedrooms,
full basement, two -car garage — for
$63,000!
The Bank of Canada has been
raising interest rates. To stop inflation
is the excuse. Do you believe it? Ask
any businessman, it increases his costs
and it is good for investors. Is this
why we see off -shore investors being
escorted around the country?
Then there is the 80 -cent dollar.
Do you remember when John Diefen-
baker was ridiculed out of office
because our dollar was 94 cents?
Our politicians do not have the
