HURON RD. 16 & PERTH RD. 6 NEWS GENE BANK SERVING CATTLE INDUSTRY The Canadian Gene Resource Bank for Cattle Breeds, a project of Joywind Farm Rare Breeds Conservancy Inc., is now officially open. The donation of a 7,000 -dose semen storage tank (liquid nitrogen cryo -flask) by Westem Ontario Breeders, along with some Dexter and Galloway semen, was important in bringing the project to fruition. Eastern Breeders of Kemptville and Belleville have also become involved with the donation of liquid nitrogen refill services for the tank as well as semen of the Guernsey breed. The resource bank recently called for tax deductible donations; each $10 puts one dose of semen into the bank's storage facility. The Joywind Farm Rare Breeds Conservancy is a federally incorporated charitable organization dedicated to the conservation, evaluation, and study of rare and minor breeds of farm animals. "Many of the rare and minor breeds are known for their abilities to forage on poor land, for their low cholesterol and fat levels, their ease of parturition, their mothering abilities, or their resistance to disease," the conservancy says. "In future, these traits may become of com- mercial importance to our animal breed- ers—butonly if they are still available." The Canadian Gene Resource Bank represents a long-term safeguard from the loss of genetic diversity within the cattle industry. For more information, contact Joywind Farm, R.
