might become has kept Skepast exper-
imenting and teaching at the college
for 20 years. Reinforcing Inglis' and
Phillips' emphasis on tiling, he says
that his greatest happiness "is that the
people here in the early '60s appreci-
ated the value of drainage."
He sees the area as becoming a
significant producer of hard red spring
wheat. "You can grow Western
varieties of wheat up here ... it doesn't
get mildew like areas further south."
The shorter distances to ports on the
Great Lakes and flour mills is an
advantage for Temiskaming over
Western Canada, he adds.
Skepast has been instrumental in
conducting pasture trials on a govern-
ment -run community pasture near
Earlton for local farmers. Gains of
500 pounds of beef per acre have been
achieved. "The cattle weren't special,
just anything we could scrape up,"
notes Skepast, adding that the pasture
was native grasses properly fertilized.
"We weren't even trying very
hard," he says, hinting of greater
things to come.
New technology — the plastic -bag
system of storing silage and the ac-
ceptance of large round bales — has
helped to streamline the longer winter
feeding period in Temiskaming. De-
pending on the year, this period may
run from near the middle of October to
the first part of May, although work is
being done with planted fall pasture
and early maturing varieties of grass
to shorten this costly chore.
The farm population in Temis-
kaming, declining for the past five
years, has stabilized and shows signs
of recovery. Some larger dairy farms
have attracted overseas buyers who, in
the "year of the drought," should be
impressed by green pastures, plump
crops of grain, and bulging haymows.
A combination of good grain
prices and cheap land may provide the
incentive necessary for Temiskaming
to reach its next plateau of achieve-
ment in agriculture. And the 1990s
will mark the beginning of a new 20 -
year cycle, a cycle that appears to
characterize the area's progress.
The interim should allow time for
the establishment of a fresh group of
farmers and perhaps some of their
friends from back home, attracted by
letters describing the potential for
growth on yet to be developed land.0
