10 THE RURAL VOICE
FREE TRADE:
VOTERS DO REMEMBER
I've been accused of being too
abrasive in my columns, but this time
around I want to start off, at least, by
apologizing: to the reader, to editor
Sheila Gunby, and finally to the own-
ers of air -conditioners who I'm curs-
ing for their good sense.
To you the reader, I apologize for
forging ahead this sweltering August
16 evening with my topic — free trade
— without knowing the outcome of
the parliamentary debate on the trade
bill. I'm watching the debate on cable
in my non -air-conditioned home. It's
obvious that the debate won't be over
in time for me to know the outcome,
though the outcome is obvious given
the lopsided government majority.
To Sheila, I apologize for being
two days late in meeting the Rural
Voice deadline. Thanks for letting me
be late; I was trying.
So much for the apologies. Now
I feel cleansed enough that I can get
back to my abrasive style.
To you, John Crosbie, court jester
entrusted with chuckling this Canada -
U.S. trade bill by the Canadian people:
when I saw you earlier this week on
CTV, you were more nasty than
funny. You were ridiculing free -trade
detractors with no humour at all. And
apparently you still hadn't read the
full deal yet. We all remember your
comment earlier this summer that you
really didn't have to read it. What
arrogance. What stupidity.
Just so you don't think this column
is anti -Tory, I haven't much good to
say for Ontario Liberal Premier David
Peterson.
To you David Peterson: I'm
disturbed to read that your government
accepts the deal as a fait accompli.
You had better not roll over and play
dead after promising earlier this year
you'd fight this deal. Some fight!
Voters do remember.
At this point folks, it would appear
that we, Canadians, are going to be
left to carry the ball. I just hope that
by the time this denunciation is
published Prime Minister Muldoon,
a one-time free -trade detractor, will
have called an election so that we, the
great unwashed, will have our say.
The American Congress has had
its say. It likes the deal. This should
be a warning alarm in itself. Anyone
who believes both countries would be
winners should this deal pass would
also believe Fantasy Island is a stop on
a South Seas cruise, not a TV show.
The day before this historic
parliamentary debate in Canada,
Ronald Reagan implored Americans
to do it one more time "for the
Gipper" by voting for George Bush.
My guess is that Americans have
had enough of Reagan's confusing
reality with his B -movie roles, and
will vote for Dukakis instead.
But here in Canada, there's every
indication that Brian Mulroney will do
what the American people won't.
Mulroney will do it for the old Gipper,
and at the same time do it to the
Canadian people and their children
and grandchildren.
Brian Mulroney has given every
indication that he intends to sell Can-
adians down the river, and according
to non-partisan observers the free -
trade deal will sell the river itself.
If there's one good side to this
summer's drought, it is that it has
focussed the attention of Canadians
and Americans on water. Canadians
have it, Americans don't — and they
want it.
But that isn't all the Americans
want. They want oil, they want to
dilute our social programs, they want
... they want ... they want!
And if Brian Mulroney gets his
way, the Americans will get ... get ...
get!O
