Members come together to promote Holstein cattle, to foster a keener inter- est in the breed and the spirit of friend- ship among dairymen, and to help to im- prove existing herds as well as to estab- lish new herds. John Fotheringham, the president, milks about 100 cows near Palmerston. His father starting breeding Holsteins in the early 1950s, and the work is being carried on by John and his two brothers. The Fotheringhams also grow alfalfa, corn, and barley on 500 acres. The club holds a number of events each year, including barn tours, barn meetings with guest speakers, and a twilight meeting and barbecue. The gatherings are social events, says Paul Erwin, secretary -treasurer, but also learning experiences. Another annual event is the Holstein Show in Stratford each September. As one of the largest of the county shows, it draws about 75 head of cattle and 45 exhibitors. The Perth Select Sale this year (December 12) is the 14th annual sale for the club. Held at Carson's Auction Service in Listowel, it includes between 50 and 60 cattle chosen by the club's county directors. The club's percentage of the profits (two to three per cent) helps to finance its activities and makes it possible for the club to donate money to other local groups. Last year, $1,200 went to 4-H. Glen Standeaven of R. R. 7, St. Marys is the club's vice-president.0
