THE PLOWMAN
Putting Together a
Plowman's Lunch
The sandwich was "invented" in the
18th century by one John Montagu,
fourth Earl of Sandwich.
It is said that he was so fond of
gambling and card play that he often
played for days without taking time for
meals. He ordered that servants bring
slices of cold beef between pieces of
bread. The plowman's lunch is a distant
descendant of his lordship's snack:
Thick sliced cold beef
Sliced ham
Crusty bread
Assorted local cheeses
One 20 oz. pint of British lager
Serve open -face on a large platter.
The diner prepares his own sandwich
and washes it down with room -
temperature beer.0
The Diary of Joseph
Abbott, Pioneer
The following are excerpts from the
diary of Joseph Abbott, April, 1819;
from the third edition of his book, The
Emigrant to North America, 1844:
(1819) April 19th.
Plowing some rough land, which
had been partially covered with bushes
and briars, with a hog plow, a sort of an
implement of very light, simple, and
primitive construction with a coulter,
but very useful for such a purpose, as it
is easily disentangled from roots which
have too firm a hold of the ground to be
torn up. The price of one is about 25s.
